Legal Conference Overkill: Time to Rethink the Circuit
We need to talk.
Because what’s happening in the legal space right now with these conferences? It’s gotten out of control.
Legal conference overkill is real. We’re being hit with events almost every other week—many of them filled with the same people, talking about the same stuff, on the same recycled panels. You leave with a tired liver, way too much sodium in your system, and a backpack full of swag you’ll never use.
Let’s be honest: most of these conferences are over-promoted and underdelivered. There’s a lot of flash, but no real substance. You walk in thinking this is the event to level up your business, and walk out realizing it was just a big party dressed up like a strategy session.
And the cost? Brutal. Firms and vendors alike are spending tens of thousands over the course of the year to chase the same leads, hear the same talks, and burn through budgets that could’ve been used more strategically. It’s not just exhausting—it’s inefficient.
Worse yet, the topics often miss the mark entirely. They’re not helping firms scale. They’re not addressing the real pain points firms are facing. And even when there is a good speaker, you’ll hear a slightly tweaked version of that same talk at three other conferences within 60 days.
So what do we do?
Here’s the flip side of the coin—because I’m not just here to complain.
- Be selective. Go where there’s true strategy, not just hype. If you’re walking away with no notes and no next steps, it wasn’t worth your time.
- Invest in results, not routines. Stop saying yes to everything out of FOMO. Build a conference strategy that aligns with your firm’s real goals.
- Vendors: it’s time we do more. We’re not just third wheels to these events—we’re powering the platforms firms depend on. What if we built something better? A space where top firms and top tools come together to actually solve problems, build systems, and walk away sharper? ( Reach out to your boy…hit me up in my DM …I’m serious…we can do it together.)
By the way – The legal conference world doesn’t need to end—but it does need a new beginning. One with intention. One with direction. One where we actually get sh*t done.
Because firms don’t need more parties. They need purpose!
Let’s bring that back.
